Street Food

Sicily is known for its street food. It's a highlight for almost all visitors to the island. You can find great street food in the towns and villages throughout Sicily, but Catania and particularly Palermo are famous for the local offerings. Trying the street food is a super way to get a real taste of Sicily, and also a super way to drink in some of the authentic local atmosphere.

Catania Street Food

Catania, as Sicily's second city, also has a strong street food culture.

Cartocciata

Brioche baked with tempting fillings inside. Choose from spinach, ham, salami or aubergines together with mozzarella.

Cipolline

A tasty pastry stuffed full of mozzarella, onion, tomato and ham. The perfect snack.

Quarume

Be brave and give it a go: tripe boiled with vegetables and served in broth. Not for everyone, but very traditional!

Sanguinaccio

Similar to a British Black Pudding, this is a pork blood sausage that is often eaten at Easter.

Cassatelle di Sant'Agata

A wonderful sweet cake, covered in marzipan and filled with ricotta. Dedicated to Sant'Agata due to its shape.

Horse Meat

Catania is famous for horse meat. Although not for everyone, this is a local speciality that is loved by the people of Catania!

Palermo Street Food

Palermo is the beating heart of Sicilian street food. You'll find delectable treats on every corner. What better way to get to know the local culture than by trying the specialities!

Panelle

Fritters made with chickpea flour. Incredibly moreish and perfect with a sprinkling of lemon juice. Often eaten in a sandwich together with crocché.

Sfincione

Similar to a deep-dish pizza, sfincione is a fluffy bread topped with tomato, anchovies, onions and caccio cavallo cheese.

Pane con la Milza

One of Palermo's most famous offerings – a spleen and lung sandwich. Not for the fainthearted!

Crocché

Mashed potato, often with mint and parsley added to the mix, breaded and deep fried.

Musso

One for the brave – a salad made principally from cow's snout. Its unique texture is loved by many!

Stigghiola

A Palermitan favourite! Spring onions wrapped in offal and grilled on the barbecue. Surprisingly delicious!

Polpo

Whole octopodes are boiled in front of you and served with slice of lemon. A real Sicilian treat!

Babbaluci

Snails are a popular street food. They are typically eaten during the Santa Rosalia festival.

Frittola

Frittola is not for the faint-hearted, but this traditional snack is made from leftover veal which is fried and served by hand from a covered basket.
